Bart's How-to Guide - Episode 1

How to tell if reality TV shows are recycling shots: Read the numbers. At first glance, the shot of Phil on top of the Westin Bonaventure hotel in downtown Los Angeles looks suspiciously like a shot from a recent episode of "America's Next Top Model," but it's not. One way that you can tell is by the giant numbers on the roofs of the buildings. The Omni, where ANTM was shot, has the number 12 on the roof, while the Westin Bonaventure building, where Phil stands, has the number 10 on the roof.

How to be a part of a growing group: Be a woman in engineering. The percentage of women in engineering, like Hendekea, has been increasing over the years. According to the Society of Women Engineers, in 1971 only 0.8% of those earning bachelor's degrees in engineering were female. By 1998, the figure had risen to 17.9%. The three other members of my senior design project at Purdue, where I received a degree in Mechanical engineering, were female - and one of them went on to receive a doctoral degree from Caltech. All of our lives have been enriched thanks to the contribution of women in engineering.

How to get to LAX from the Playboy Mansion: Take a left. All of the teams headed out on Charing Cross Road to its end, where it meets Sunset Boulevard. The only way to the 405 and LAX was to the left, but all of the teams stayed on Sunset Boulevard directly to the 405. Google Maps suggests turning left on Beverly Glen Boulevard, then right on Wilshire, and taking Wilshire to the 405. This route saves about a minute, but a minute could be the difference between the first flight and the second flight.

How to avoid flight delays: Connect in airports that have fewer flight delays....In London's Heathrow Airport, over one third of flights were delayed more than 15 minutes.

How to avoid flight delays: Connect in airports that have fewer flight delays. In London's Heathrow Airport, over one third of flights were delayed more than 15 minutes. For British Airways flights from Los Angeles, the figure grows to one half. Changing planes at airports with fewer delays can help to keep you from falling behind. All major US airports are better at on time performance than London Heathrow, but some are better than others, according to the US Department of Transportation. Airports in the New York Area (Newark, Kennedy, and LaGuardia), Minneapolis, Seattle, and San Francisco all have more flight delays. The airports with the fewest number of late flights are Houston Bush, Chicago Midway, Baltimore, Denver, Tampa, and Cincinnati. Choosing a connecting airport with a good track record can help keep you from dealing with a delayed flight.

How to inspire the title of a TV show: Make your donkey sounds. The sounds that Nathan and Jennifer's donkey made sounded like "Hee Haw, Hee Haw, Hee Haw." In 1969, Hee Haw started as a show on the CBS network. Although the show was strongly identified with rural American life, two of the three creators of the show were Canadians, and the show's original production company, Yongestreet Productions, was named after a major street in Toronto. The show was cancelled as a part of a 1971 purge of programs that primarily drew rural, older viewers, but it survived in syndication for another twenty-two years before finally ending its run in 1993.

How to become the first team Philiminated: Get your karmic reward. In the pre-race interview, Ari states, "Karma's a bitch, but I'm a bigger bitch." Well, Ari, after getting the stubbornest donkey that has ever stubborned, and treating it like crap, looks like karma decided to prove you wrong. As John Lennon once eloquently said, "Instant Karma's Gonna Get You...."
