Culture Report – Argentina

Among the most famous of Argentina’s writers are poet and short-story writer, Jorge Luis Borges, Ernesto Sábato and Manuel Puig. Manual Puig's novels include Kiss of the Spider Woman and Betrayed by Rita Hayworth.

Some non-fiction books about Argentina include D F Sarmient's Life in the Argentine Republic in the Days of the Tyrants, José Luis Romero's A History of Argentine Political Thought, Gauchos and the Vanishing Frontier by Richard W Slatta, Perón and the Enigma of Argentina by Robert Crassweller and The Disappeared: Voices from a Secret War by John Simpson and Jana Bennett.

Argentinean movies include Apartment Zero (with the wonderful Colin Firth), The Man Who Faced Southeast and the film version of Puig's Kiss of the Spider Woman (which wasn’t filmed in Argentina but Brazil) [but which is a fantastic movie - miri].
