German Culture

Gunter Grass, winner of the 1999 Nobel Prize in literature, has played a key role in German literary life since the late 1950s. His novels include the Tin Drum, Cat and Mouse, and Crabwalk. Other famous German writers include Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Heinrich Heine, Thomas Mann, and dramatist Bertolt Brecht.

Many of the world’s greatest musicians were German including Johann Sebastian Bach, George Handel, Ludwig van Beethoven, Felix Mendelssohn, Franz Schubert, and Kurt Weill. Famous German artists include Albrecht Durer, Hans Holbein the Younger, and Max Beckmann.
