Fashion Report - Episode Five

I could go on and on, but this isn’t the Scenery report, so on to the fashion talk.
Swimmerboy: I? Loved this episode. Loved loved loved it! So much to look at! The Hermitage, the tower of Cairo, the pyramids and the Sphinx??? Wow, I would have killed to run this leg! I could go on and on, but this isn’t the Scenery report, so on to the fashion talk. I don’t think I need to get into the post-Egypt digs since everyone was pretty much wearing the same thing as in the previous episode, but I did want to comment on something I missed last week--namely Chip’s giant beanie hat. Boy was that ever goofy looking. But Chip’s a goofy guy, so I’ll cut him some slack on it. I can only guess that he wanted Brandon to try it on because he’s as tired of that hair as we are. Also, Phil’s Big Coat somehow looked ten times better this week. Me likey.

Daria: I have not checked the credits to see who’s dressing him this season, but whoever it is has done a fabulous job. Notice how he’s mostly in neutral colors, but with some contrast to his tanned skin. There’s contrast and then there’s contrast. A gray sweater sets off his features nicely, unlike a certain red turtleneck that might have had a man wearing it last season.

Swimmerboy: Ok, so on to Egypt. Hmm…well, ok. The scenery may have been great this week, but the racers didn’t give us much to look at. Once again, I was more intrigued by the costumes worn by the Egyptian participants than the racers themselves.
Everyone played his part so well – the Egyptologist and the “priest” both looked so serious, while the camel jockeys were just on the verge of smiling.
Daria: Everyone played his part so well – the Egyptologist and the “priest” both looked so serious, while the camel jockeys were just on the verge of smiling. Speaking of smiles, I want to note that Charla has a great one. (I’m not a member of the Mirna fan club, however.) And I was quite disturbed to see Charla without gloves in Russia. I thought “poor little fingers!” And she wasn’t the only racer without gloves. It hurt just to watch some of these people. Brrrrr!

Swimmerboy: Did you notice that while Brandon and Nicole and Charla and Mirna both opted for semi-matching outfits this leg, the bowling moms were NOT wearing matching shirts? That’s a first, isn’t it? And I must say, a welcome respite.

Daria: Indeed. I’m kind of hoping they sell a few shirts when they go out begging. That way they can lighten their packs, earn some money, and spare our sensibilities. I just don’t believe they dress like that at home. Again, I thought Colin and Christie looked good, but they were still in their Russia garb. And I think Mirna is putting on eye make-up, still.

Swimmerboy: Mirna continues to impress. I really liked her red and black top combined with the black and white patterned scarf. And I’ve come to the conclusion that I love her hair. It’s so bouncy and flowy and she’s the only racer I’ve ever witnessed whose hair always still looks good at the end of each leg. And speaking of hair, Linda’s was looking quite spiffy on the morning of her and Karen’s flight to Frankfurt. Did she get it styled sometime that night?

Daria: Here’s what I thought after seeing that: the Lufthansa ticket agent appeared ready to close up shop. So maybe she took Linda and Karen back to her place, and they did their hair and their nails. Probably not, but it’s a fun image.
I think we should take up a collection to send a tip to Phil’s stylist this season.
Swimmerboy: I’m not sure there was anything that made me absolutely cringe this week (well, maybe Linda’s turquoise blue bowling shirt and black track pants…didn’t like that at all), but I sure did smile at Phil in his beautiful green shirt and jeans. I think we should take up a collection to send a tip to Phil’s stylist this season.

Daria: By this time last season, we’d had The Ugly Red Turtleneck inflicted upon us. This year? He’s looked classy every single episode.

Swimmerboy: Pretty People! Umm…I’m thinking that this week the honor will go to Chip and Kim again. Funny hat aside, they ran a good clean leg and appeared to have the most fun of any other team this week. They’re a great looking couple, and good attitudes like theirs only make them more attractive.

Daria: I like Chip and Kim a lot, but I can’t bring myself to give them the Pretty People award this week. She wore that busy scarf I don’t like, and I think they’ve got way too much stuff in their packs. Her coat is big! Yet none of the other racers struck my fancy this week. So I’m going to give the award to the local people who staffed the tasks in Russia and Egypt over the last two legs. The Cossacks, the dancers, the hockey players, the museum curators, the Egyptologist, the “priest”, and the camel drivers – they impressed me far more than the racers. Maybe next week, the racers will look better.
