TAR Virginís View - Episode Five

I can't help wondering if other new viewers are wandering through the same quagmire of confusion when it comes to these "magic cards."
As you all know ... I'm a "newbie" ... and I'm still learning my way around TAR. I'm lucky that I know someone who's an expert on this show, but I can't help wondering if other new viewers are wandering through the same quagmire of confusion when it comes to these "magic cards."

Now, in the first episode, we had a "yield" ... oh, isn't that cute, it's like a street sign! Then a "detour" ... then a "roadblock!" While it's true I still get my "detours" and "roadblocks" confused, I am distinctly getting the impression that these things have a theme. That's cool. Themes rule. It's all about "roads" and hey, that fits because this is a race. Awesome!

So what the heck is this "fast forward" business? This is NOT a road word. This is a button on my tape player. Right away my brain is doing the Lost in Space robot thing, "This does not compute!", followed by me waving my arms around and trying to find the phone to call Tribefan for help.

And there's other stuff I needed to know. Are these funky cards in ALL the racers' envelopes? And, if they are, how do the other teams know if the first team to find it used it? I know that Phil (who is, I must confirm, a total cutie pie) gives a pretty decent overview of what's happening, but there are still so many holes ... and my brain is Swiss cheese as it is. Sometimes the camera work is so choppy it's hard for me to follow who's where and how far ahead or behind they are. And I still don't quite understand the rules. I understand the new non-elimination loser rule is a new one ... yes, you get to stay in the race, but we're robbing you of all your money. What's THAT all about? It's like picking the wings off a couple of insects and then throwing them out the window and demanding they fly. I realize that The Powers That Be probably put that in there for dramatic effect, but c'mon! Right away I'm wondering if I should even bother watching the next episode because, gee, who's probably going to get eliminated? Begging for cash eats up tons of time (especially if Linda and Karen try to get money from anyone related to me!). I have to tell you, I wasn't overly impressed by this rule.

But on the positive side, I'm delighted that nobody had to eat anything gross this week ... and I could really appreciate in full why there are diehard fans of this show. The scenery in both St. Petersburg and Cairo was utterly incredible! For sheer aesthetics this was, by far, my favorite episode!
